Our Philosophy

The growth and recognition of Drama at Bedford Modern School has been prolific in recent years: we now have a completely separate department offering Drama courses to every year in the school. This growth has been due to a belief shared by the Drama and English staff and the Senior Management of the school that Drama offers students unique experiences that are broadening and enriching. We believe that Drama offers them a completely different way of making sense of the world around them, developing the ability to work in a disciplined yet warm environment. For the younger students we are equally interested in their development as people as in the growth of their technical skills; later when they opt for examination courses, they are encouraged to broaden their own interests in both performance and the technical aspects of theatre. In the Drama Department we believe in the concept of pupil dignity, and although a large emphasis is placed on performance, we encourage the students to view each other's work in a supportive rather than judgmental manner. Discussions may follow presentations of work, but any criticisms must be made constructively and are carefully monitored by the teaching staff to avoid damaging fragile egos. The Drama Department works closely to the English Department, sharing some teaching staff. It is, however a completely separate Department in terms of resources, budgeting and administration. Co-curricular Drama is obviously closely linked to the work of the Department but is administered independently, The Director of Drama reports to the Productions Committee which is chaired by the Second Master and administers school productions and concerts.
